Optimizing Blogs for iPhone

by mqholt on January 12, 2009

If you regularly read this blog on an iPhone, you certainly noticed the change last week to a new mobile format. (See the screen shot below if viewing on immobile device.)

It’s a great format. And you may have wondered how many days I spent writing CSS and JavaScript to get it to work so well.

Well, I didn’t spend any. It’s powered by WPTouch, a custom Wordpress theme for MobileSafari that is available as a free Wordpress plug-in from Brave New Code.

Here’s what Brave New Code says about it: “WPtouch automatically transforms your WordPress blog into an iPhone application-like experience when viewed from an iPhone or iPod touch. It comes complete with ajax & effects, and all the standard WordPress blog features: search, login, categories, tags, archives, photos & more. WPtouch also allows for near-complete customization through your WordPress admin.”

All you have to do is upload the file to your blog’s plugins folder, and then go to your admin screen and click “activate.” That’s it. But if you want to, there is all sort of customization that is available. I use it, and I think it’s great.
